The film and the novel both go into depth with explaining how Morrie adapts to his disease and learns to embrace it instead of running away from it. Morrie encourages Mitch to free himself of this corrupt, dictatorial culture in favor of his own, and it is only when he does that he begins to reassess his life and rediscover fulfillment.
